Abstract
In July 1936, Spanish General Francisco Franco waged a military coup against Spain's democratic government (Palfreeman, 2019). This sparked the beginning of the Spanish Civil War and became a major precursor to the Second World War (Palfreeman and Pinkerton, 2019). Anti-fascists from around the world including anarchists, communists, socialists, trade unionists and humanitarians joined in the fight against fascism (Saxton, 1984; Baxell et al, 2010).
